Rabbi Joe is beginning his 31st year as a Hillel Director this fall, and his 28th year at Stony Brook. He loves working on the campus, shmoozing with students, telling stories and jokes, and teaching Torah. He has a BA in Humanities/Judaic Studies from the University of Texas at Austin, an MA in Contemporary Jewish Studies and Jewish Communal Service from Brandeis University, and Rabbinic Ordination from the Academy for Jewish Religion. His wife, Susan Remick Topek, is the Director of the Department of Early Childhood Education at the Suffolk Association of Jewish Educational Services and the author of seven Jewish children's books. They have three daughters, Leah (married to Dan), Sara (married to Eric), and Chana (engaged to Josh) and a grandsons Owen and Wyatt born August 30th, 2009.. Rabbi Joe's area of academic interest is American Jewish military history, a subject on which he has lectured and published extensively. This past summer he delivered a series of lectures for the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service at the Governors Island National Monument. Rabbi Joe is also an old car enthusiast and has been restoring a 1938 Studebaker for many years, and also has an interest in the American Civil War.

Jill just celebrated her 10th anniversary with Hillel. Her career began at SBU in 1995 when she served as the Director of Outreach. Since that time, she has held almost every position within Hillel including service on the Board of Directors during her few years in the corporate world.

Jill (formerly Teicher) was the Director of Outreach and Engagement for Stony Brook University Hillel in 1995 after graduating from the University of Delaware in Sociology and Judaic Studies. Since then, she has been a part of every department here at some point including the Board of Directors. She received her Masters in Professional Development at Stony Brook in 2002 while running the first Hillel gala honoring Dean Yacov Shamash. She lives in Stony Brook with her husband Darin (A Business Analyst), children Ari (6 1/2), Sam (4),newborn baby girl Abby and their cat Zach. Jill is an avid scrapbooker and reader.  She is on the Executive Board of the Young Leadership chapter of Hadassah in our area and was honored with their Love of a Lifetime award in 2009 at the annual Myrtle Wreath Celebration.

Joy is a 2003 Stony Brook alum (BA English) and has been the Program Director at Hillel since 2007. She loves working with students and the entire University community to create extraordinary Jewish experiences at Stony Brook. The Stony Brook campus has become her home away from home and she is always ready to share her enthusiasm for Stony Brook with others.

When not at Hillel, Joy is a theater enthusiast and loves all things related to the stage. She has been seen across Long Island performing in many community theater productions. This year at Hillel, Rabbi Dave will be found more at the Snyder Hillel Center in his new office space next to Sonya.  Some of his new duties will include:

Community Service

Tabling (The new Campus Caravan)

GAP (Graduate and Professionals)

HSC (Health Sciences Center Hillel)

Of course he will be continuing his ROOTS work of the past two years including:

Teaching Maimonodes with his Rabbi and mentor, Rabbi Adelman

Teaching Lunch and Learns

Hosting Shabbat meals (artfully prepared by his loving wife Tova)

Recruiting for Israel Trips

And if that leaves him any free time . . . .

He loves spending time with Tova in thier Stony Brook home with their children Pinchas, Sarah Bracha,Tzivia Ahuva and Yocheved Gittel.

Rabbi David and Tova Delman, both from Silver Spring, MD, resided in Beit Shemesh, Israel. Rabbi Dave, as he is known, was legendary in Israel for his open Shabbos table and his programming in which he spent countless Friday nights with teenagers from newly immigrant families from America. He and Mrs. Delman developed many successful methods to help these young people adjust to Israeli society. From Israel, the Delmans moved to Austin to continue their outreach at the University of Texas. It was a common occurrence for Tova and Rabbi Dave to have 20 or more students at their table every Shabbos.

Dineen has been with Hillel since September 2009 and since than has been responsible for making every wheel turn including:

room reservations

purchasing

tech support

answering phones

maintaining our database of students

assisting with High Holiday tickets and all major community events

signing out items from the Fran Zak Judaic Library and Resource Center

greeting you when you walk in the door!

She lives in Stony Brook with her husband and 2 children.  We are grateful to have Dineen as part of our team.
