Shabbat & Holidays

Jews don't keep Shabbat . . . . Shabbat keeps the Jews.

SOS: Save our Shabbatons

Shabbaton meals at Stony Brook Hillel were not always free. It was the dream of one student President that came true thanks to the generosity of community and faculty members. Unfortunately, they cannot remain free for the rest of this academic year without the help of students, parents and alum.

Students - if you have leftover meal points every year that you use on cases of water, you can make a committment upfront to use them towards your own Shabbat meals.  Even if you do not have a meal plan, you can still contribute.

All SOS participants will receive permanent recognition in Delancey Street as well as special treats throughout the year including a surprise at our Purim Party.

e offer 4 different Shabbt experiences each month.

Twice a month, Shabbaton meals are offered to students at no cost thanks to our generous donors.  You too can help offset this cost by utilizing your meal points to pre-purchase these dinners. Some students or parents also choose to make cash donations to subsidize these meals.  However if you choose not to, they will always be free for you. For more information please contact Jill Zucker.

Shabbaton dinners follow your choice of student led Conservative services held in Delancey Street, or Orthodox services held in conjunction with the Stony Brook Hebrew Congregration in the Interfaith Chapel (Union, 249). Shabbaton dinners always feature a speaker or program; one major and one minor program a month.

Shabbaton lunches are held at 12:30 in Delancey Street.  The third Shabbat meal, and an "Ask the Rabbi" session is held at the home of one of our Rabbis.

Once a month, students are invited to the homes of our staff, Rabbis and friends.

Once a month, students enjoy a casual Shabbat dinner with no programming. These meals are pre-purchased utilizing your campus meal plan.
