Shabbat & Holidays

At Stony Brook Hillel, Shabbat is a meaningful and festive experience of togetherness.  We are proud to offer a combination of Shabbaton (full weekend of Shabbat meals and programs), Home Hospitality Shabbat experiences and student hosted meals.

Shabbat Services:

There are Shabbat services offered each week at Stony Brook University. The Stony Brook Hebrew Congregation provides services every week for both Friday night and Saturday morning. On Shabbaton weekends, our students lead an Egalitarian service option on Friday night.

Stony Brook Hillel Shabbatons are vibrant and exciting! Students come together to enjoy programs and meals revolving around student developed themes. All students are welcome  and encouraged to take part in the planning of Hillel Shabbatons. Some of our most popular themes in the past have been:

Israel Shabbat

Murder Mystery Shabbat

Under the Sea Shabbat

Shabbaton meals are FREE for students thanks to the generosity of Hillel Supporters. Help keep Shabbatons free for Stony Brook Students.

Home Hospitality Meals:

On some non-Shabbaton weekends, our partner organization, AISH often hosts students for Shabbat dinner and lunch. These meals allow students to get a true taste of Shabbat in a Traditional Jewish household.

Student Hosted Shabbat Meals:

Students are also encouraged to host their own meals on non- Shabbaton weekends and we provide a subsidy for food as well as a supply of challah and grape juice. Our students love the chance to create the own Shabbat experience for themselves and their peers.
